Building Great Sentences: Exploring the Writer’s Craft By Professor Brooks Landon

Building Great Sentences: Exploring the Writer's CraftMy most listened to AudioBook lecture for the last year.

I purchased this audiobook to help me write better while teaching on-line classes. The audio lectures helped me write better but also introduced me to new concepts I had not considered.

Format sentences better

As an accountant in the business world, I have always been taught to write precisely and often advised to write short sentences, advice which has been helpful in many cases.

Professor Landon demonstrates, however, that there is a place for longer sentences and longer sentences often reduce the content needed, making writing more precise, more descriptive, and therefore more efficient.

Why learn about the sentence?Audible

The sentence is the largest structure in writing that has a clear definition or structure.

The ability to describe the characteristics of a sentence allows for analyzing the sentence structure and for analyzing larger works through sentence structure.

The definition of a paragraph is much less defined, there being no clear rule for when one paragraph should end and when a new paragraph should begin.

I had never heard the term cumulative sentence until listening to Professor Landon and, although I’m not quite as passionate about the cumulative sentence as the Professor, and he is passionate about cumulative sentences, I agree that this sentence structure has many uses, many applications which improve writing for anybody by adding to the writer’s toolkit.

I will not get into the mechanics of sentence structure because I’m no expert, but I have started being able to hear what Professor Landon is talking about when I read my writing, and the writing of others, Professor Landon often describing the rhythm of a sentence. Especially the rhythm of cumulative construction.

Who is this audiobook for?

Anyone. That said, Professor Landon is clearly an English professor and writer and many of his examples are geared toward the writing of novels, although he does give other examples as well, some being of the business world.

Mechanics of sentences in a practical & interesting wayAudible

Professor Landon explains the mechanics of sentences in a way that is practical and useful.

I used to think of sentence structure as many people seem to think of math, as the uninteresting mechanics of how things work. In the case of sentences how communication works.

One reason people often do not enjoy learning the mechanics of sentences or the concepts of math is that the ideas are abstract, requiring the memorization of abstract concepts.

Putting abstract concepts into practice, however, makes them much more interesting and much more useful.

Professor Landon does talk about terminology and how sentences work, but he spends most of his time giving examples, demonstrating how concepts work, showing how tools can be applied in different situations.

Professors Landon’s passion for sentences. Any lecture worth listening to needs a presenter who is passionate about the topic and I’ve never heard anyone more passionate and knowledgeable about sentence structure.
